Action East Devon, formerly EDVSA, is the leading local charity working with the people, communities and organisations of East Devon to create the services and support they need to live happier and healthier lives.
Action East Devon received a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund to deliver an Oral History project in Axminster and surrounding area.
The project captured people’s memories of life in Axminster during World War Two. These records form part of an oral history archive which can be accessed at the Devon Heritage Centre in Exeter and at Upottery Heritage Centre.
Previously, not much was known about how the war impacted the lives of residents and evacuees to the area. Through conversations with local people who remember the events and way of life during these years, the project has saved these memories for future generations to learn from.
A team of volunteers was recruited from the local community and trained to collect oral histories from older people, including those suffering from more advanced memory loss, to create a permanent record of life in World War Two.
Action East Devon also worked with Axe Valley Community College to hold tea parties to reminisce about the war time, enabling students to talk to people and hear first-hand what life was like. The students also created artwork in response to these stories. This art work has been incorporated into the design of the site.
